| Desk Hutch with Flipper Doors | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
|
Several hutches with flipper doors are a key feature on this project. The sitting height hutch areas are an extended part of the larger, standing height center island benches. The hutches are positioned adjacent to the windows in the lab (see layout). Each center island bench contains two desk hutch areas back to back. Access to the adjoining work area makes it easy for lab personnel to utilize both areas. Each hutch provides fixed open shelving at the top and two flipper doors with locks. The lockable compartments will hold an 8-1/2 x 11 binder. Divider panels on both sides of the hutch provide support and privacy (see detail). A task light is mounted underneath the hutch to light the desk. Tackboards and tackstrips added to the hutch and desk area let the user post important notes. A grommet hole in the countertop provides for computer or other equipment to be powered from below without the cords interfering with the work area. |

| Desk Hutch with Adjustable Shelves |
|
The bookcase shelves are adjustable and removable (see details). These bookcases are very economical because theyre simply wall cabinets with the bottoms removed.
| Several back-to-back desk areas are utilized on this project. These areas are positioned along the window wall of each lab and are separated from the work benches by an aisle (see layout). By placing back-to-back bookcaseson top of these desk areas, the individual at each desk gets some privacy and a place to store binders and books. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Divider Panel Between Work Bench & Desk Areas |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Where it is necessary to have a desk area adjacent to a work bench on the same wall (see layout), a 3/4 oak plywood panel was utilized to divide the two areas. The divider panel adds some privacy at the desk area, and protects it from any spills or splashes which may occur at the work bench. The design of the panel is enhanced by having it follow the depth profile of the casework -- 37 wide at the base cabinets and 17 wide at the wall cabinets -- with a smooth diagonal transition between the two depths (see details). |

| Lattice Racks at Island Benches | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
|
The island work benches have back-to-back lattice racks installed on them (see layout). The rack frames are constructed using strut-type channel and fastened directly to the epoxy resin work tops using a concealed fastening system. The channel is furnished with a beige finish, not the typical green finish usually associated with strut channel. The horizontal and vertical lattice rack rod (1/2 dia.) material is aluminum, but could have been fiberglass or stainless steel. The back-to-back lattice racks fit comfortably on the islands unit. The distance from the front edge of the work top to the rack is 19-3/4 on each side (see details). The bench width also allowed for a two-tier shelving assembly to run in between the racks, down the center of the bench.
| Strut Shelving | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
|
The center bench islands are equipped with resin shelves implementing a strut type shelving system. The upper tiers of shelving use a standard strut type bracket, while the bottom tier is suited with the M31A bracket. The tubular design of this bottom bracket allows a task light to be fastened to the bottom shelf (see detail). Both types of brackets are installed on vertical strut channel that mount to the countertop and run through the lay in ceiling. Electrical raceway is mounted to the strut channel to provide power to the work area and tackstrip is attached to the front of the bottom shelf. Note that the brackets and channel for this project were painted per job specifications. |

| The unique cylinder drying rack system is made of corrosion proof stainless steel C and Z brackets. Additional storage is provided with an epoxy resin shelf above the drying rack and an epoxy resin pegboard below. The C and Z brackets are adjustable to accommodate varied widths of cylinders. Acrylic Shield to Separate Work Areas | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| The acrylic shields located near the end of the center island benches provide a clear alternative to the division and protection of the work areas (see layout). The shields are 1/2 thick and located behind the sinks to prevent splashes into other work areas. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
